Course Outline

Students will undertake five key modules, made up of 40 lessons.

Module 1: Counselling Skills I (100 hours)

This module is designed to give you an introduction into the role of a counsellor and how a counsellor facilitates a person’s resolution of issues, whilst respecting their values, personal resources, culture and capacity for choice.

You will learn techniques to provide insight into a client’s feelings and behaviour to help the client adjust and change their behaviour if necessary. From the basic foundations, such as improving your listening and communication skills, to discovering ways to articulate and comment on a client’s issue from a professional perspective. This course covers a wide spectrum of counselling, which can be beneficial for many careers, for example, a nurse, youth leader, personal trainer or teacher.

Module 2: Counselling Skills II (100 hours)

This module is designed to hone your micro-skills. Micro-skills are the techniques, which counsellors use to help clients find solutions for dealing with their problems. This module also provides professional development for those already working in counselling, welfare, human resources management or care services.

Delving deeper into specific problem-solving techniques, you will explore aggression, depression, grief and loss and suicide, and various methods to provide counsel in these situations.

Module 3: Counselling Techniques (100 Hours)

This module introduces you to the foundational theories and practices of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, including the works of Freud, Erikson, Jung, and Adler. It also delves into the humanistic and existential approaches, highlighting Gestalt Therapy by Fritz Perls and Person-Centred Counselling by Carl Rogers, along with Rational Behavioural Therapy by Albert Ellis and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy by Aaron Beck.

In addition to these theoretical frameworks, the module covers practical aspects of behavioural therapy and solution-focused counselling. This comprehensive overview equips you with a diverse range of techniques and approaches, enhancing your ability to provide effective counselling across various client needs and situations, and is particularly beneficial for those in counselling, welfare, human resources management, or care services.

Module 4: Professional Practice in Counselling (100 hours)

Discover foundational aspects of counselling. It starts with an overview of counselling basics, delving into the vital areas of ethics and confidentiality. This module emphasises the importance of self-awareness for counsellors, exploring how personality, emotions, and behaviour impact their practice.

This module covers essential elements like supervision, crucial for skill development and maintaining effective practice, and referral practices, highlighting the importance of recognizing professional limits and the need for collaboration in client care. This module is key for those aiming to uphold professionalism and efficacy in their counselling careers.

Module 5: Crisis Counselling (100 Hours)

Gain focused learning on crisis intervention, covering methods and the associated ethical, professional, and legal issues. It emphasises understanding the dangers and effective strategies for handling crises, providing a solid foundation in this critical area of counselling.

The module also explores developmental crises, post-traumatic stress disorder, the effects of violence and sexual assault, and issues related to drug addiction and family crises.
